Escape to the California Alps: Top 5 Boondocking Locations
Are you looking for an off-the-grid adventure in the heart of California? Look no further than the California Alps! This stunning mountain range region located in alpine County California and home to the world renown Death Ride, offers some of the best boondocking camping opportunities in the state. Boondocking, also known as dispersed camping, is camping outside of developed campgrounds. It’s a great way to experience nature in solitude and tranquility.
In this post, we’ll share five of the best boondocking locations in the California Alps. From secluded lakes to scenic mountain passes, there’s something for everyone. Alpine County California is often referred to as the California alps. Home of the infamous Death Ride each Summer, Alpine County is a Four season Playground that is know for its wide open spaces. Boondocking in The California Alps is plentiful and beautiful with lakes, rivers and trails in all directions. Maybe on of our favorite things about Alpine county however is the lack of People. 1 per per square mile is a slogan they use at times. It is easy to find space where it can seem like you are the only human around. Enjoy these Five Top boondocking locations:
Three National Forests of Alpine County
Before we dive into the best spots, let’s explore the vast public lands that make Alpine County a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The federal government owns about 96% of Alpine County, the highest percentage in California. This translates to a treasure trove of outdoor experiences managed by three distinct national forests:
- Eldorado National Forest: This sprawling forest encompasses over 695,000 acres and contributes 7.81% (roughly 54,318 acres) to Alpine County’s land area.
- Stanislaus National Forest: With nearly 900,000 acres total, Stanislaus National Forest covers 13.32% (approximately 119,805 acres) of Alpine County.
- Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest: This massive forest boasts over 6 million acres, with a smaller portion (3.72% or 233,962 acres) extending into Alpine County.
These national forests offer a variety of recreational activities, including hiking, fishing, biking, and, of course, boondocking.
Top 5 Boondocking Locations in the California Alps
- Summit Lake: Tucked away near Raymond Peak, Summit Lake offers a great night of mountain camping. There are three small reservoirs off Sunset Lake Rd that provide beautiful scenery and opportunities for relaxation.
- Forestdale Divide: Easily accessed from Highway 88, the Forestdale Divide road branches off on several dirt road trails that lead to great camping spots.
- Burnside Lake Road: This popular boondocking area has multiple locations along Pickett Peak to discover the beauty of Alpine County. With plenty of spots to choose from, you’re sure to find the perfect place to pitch your tent.
- Silver Creek: While space is limited and the highway is close, these roadside camp locations just before Ebbett’s Pass are excellent spots to relax and take in the scenery.
- Blue Lakes Road: This popular Hope Valley excursion location is scattered with roadside camping areas, perfect for small boondocking family outings.
Boondocking Tips
Before you head out on your boondocking adventure, be sure to do your research and plan ahead. Here are a few tips:
- Know the regulations. Boondocking regulations vary by location. Be sure to check with the local land management agency before you camp.
- Leave no trace. When you leave your campsite, make sure to pack out all of your trash and leave the area as you found it.
- Be prepared for the weather. The weather in the California Alps can change quickly. Be sure to pack for all conditions.
- Bring plenty of supplies. You’ll need to be self-sufficient when boondocking. Be sure to bring plenty of food, water, and firewood.
- Respect wildlife. Be aware of your surroundings and take steps to avoid attracting wildlife.
