Scarpa Moraine Mid WP: A Hiking Boot Built for Safety and Comfort in the Sierra Nevada
The Scarpa Moraine Mid WP boot is a compelling option for Sierra Nevada explorers who value safety and comfort on the trails. This recently released boot from Scarpa, a brand traditionally known for its ski mountaineering footwear, boasts a well-constructed design, impressive features, and a unique safety technology that could be lifesaving. We discovered these new boots at the OMA event in February and were thrilled to have the opportunity for an early look.
Built to Last on Sierra Trails
We at Sierra Rec recently tested the Moraine Mid WP on several spring outings, including snowshoeing adventures near Twin Lakes and Lake Tahoe and day hikes on granite and sandy trails in the high desert. The boot performed admirably in all conditions.
The premium oiled nubuck leather upper is immediately noticeable for its durability. It feels like a boot that can withstand the rigors of Sierra hiking for many seasons to come. While a bit stiffer than some traditional hiking boots, the step feels comfortable and supportive, providing a good balance between flexibility and stability on uneven terrain.
Waterproof and Breathable for All-Weather Performance
The Moraine Mid WP kept our feet comfortably dry during our snowshoeing excursions and on wet trails. I look forward to testing this in the Winter run-off hikes in Desolation, where the trail is often very wet.
The PFAS-free waterproof membrane effectively blocks moisture without compromising breathability, a key feature for Sierra hikers who encounter a variety of weather conditions.
RECCO: A Safety Feature for Off-Trail Adventures
One of the most exciting aspects of the Moraine Mid WP is its integration of RECCO technology. This rescue reflector system is a welcome addition for anyone who ventures off-trail in the Sierra Nevada. While we hope never to need it, the peace of mind knowing rescuers can locate you more quickly in an emergency is invaluable. REcco technology allows helicopters to signal the ground from above and wait for a specific transmission back, identifying a person that may be lost under trees or rock cover.
Additional Features to Keep You on the Trail
The Scarpa Moraine Mid WP has additional features that enhance the overall hiking experience. These include:
- Injected TPU heel counter: Provides rearfoot stability and support.
- PRESA® HIK-04 / SuperGum outsole: Offers excellent traction on a variety of terrains.
- Recycled fabric construction: A nod to environmental responsibility.
A Solid Choice for Sierra Hikers
Overall, the Scarpa Moraine Mid WP is a well-built, comfortable, and feature-rich hiking boot that’s perfect for Sierra Nevada adventures. Whether you’re a seasoned backpacker or a weekend day hiker, this boot combines performance, durability, and safety, making it a serious contender for your next footwear upgrade.
The upgraded boot comes in mens, women’s and a mid option as well.
